January 22, 12-2: "Having Children in Graduate
School" panel event. Wrigley 481, Tempe
Campus
The decision to start a family is never an easy one, but when you are in
graduate school there are unique set of questions to address: “Will I be able
to complete my research?”, “Will I be able to finish my dissertation?”, “Will I
have the support of my committee members?”, “What resources does ASU offer mothers
and new parents?”, “Will having children hurt my job prospects?”, “Perhaps I
should wait, but will having children as a new professor be any easier?”. We
have lined up an excellent and experienced panel of speakers, both graduate
students and Professors. Each panelist will talk for 10-15 minutes
about their experiences and then the floor will open up for questions. This
event is geared towards women and men, as well as those who aren’t even ready
to have children but think it might be a possibility in the future, so spread
the word and invite your friends to come along. Refreshments will be
served thanks to funding from ASU's GPSA.
February 18/19/20th: 2nd Annual “Oral Presentation Workshop”. Exact Times and Locations TBD
Because it was so successful last year we are bringing back this incredibly
helpful workshop. During this workshop students will make 3-5 minute presentations
on a topic of their choice (seriously, anything), and then receive immediate feedback
from experienced instructors of public speaking and oral communication. This
workshop provides the chance to hone interview, conference presentation, and
job talk skills. Once we have finalized the times and locations students will
have an opportunity to sign up for the workshop time that is best for them. This
is a wonderful opportunity to practice your presentation style and mannerisms
in a low-risk environment. If you are interested in participating more
information a schedule and a sign-up sheet will be sent out soon. Space will be
limited so as to make sure that those participating receive plenty of feedback.
Outside Events:
VDAY 2015 - The Vagina Monologues + One Billion Rising Party
This year’s PHX
production of "The Vagina Monologues" is being held downtown at the
very swanky Phoenix Press Club on February 14. Doors open at 7pm and show is at
8pm. The show is followed by a big party that will go on until 2am.
The
playwright introduces new monologues each year, so if you've seen “The Vagina
Monologues” in the past - you will see
some new material.
General
Admission tickets are $25 with a limited number of student tickets available
for $10. Money raised this evening will be donated to local groups that support
abused women.
Please email us at [email protected] if there are any events happening that you would like GWA to promote!

Wednesday, September 10, 12-2 MU 236. "Strategies for Happiness and Success in Graduate School”
This will be a unique panel discussion focusing on maintaining “happiness” while doing graduate work; all departments offer advice for how to be a successful graduate student, but what is the use of success if you have made yourself miserable to get there? Graduate school is a long, stressful, and sometimes isolating process, so the graduate students who are leading this panel will offer information and tips on staying happy while staying focused. Attendees are welcome to bring lunch along.
